Long-Term Partnership at Sotkamo Mine

Tallqvist has been working at the Sotkamo mine since 2007, when it was still operated by Talvivaara Oy. Over the years, the mine has undergone many changes, but Tallqvist has remained a nearly constant presence on site. During the past years, the company has been involved in a wide range of projects at the mine.

"One of the major assignments during the current operator Terrafame Oy’s time was assisting with overburden rock transport between 2015 and 2019,” explains project manager Markku Anttisaari. “Before that, Tallqvist carried out various works including overburden removal, protective structures for membranes, construction of various basins, and building the access road known as Malmitie leading to the mine."

In the summer of 2023, Tallqvist completed a new raffinate basin for Terrafame. The comprehensive contract included tasks such as mass replacement, earth cuts, blasting, embankment structures, pipelines, manholes, and membrane protection.

Challenging Projects Are a Perfect Fit for Tallqvist

Currently, Tallqvist is performing blasting and crushing operations both in the mine and at the primary leaching area. At the mine site, aggregates are produced for road construction and maintenance, while the leaching area mainly requires coarse gravel placed beneath the leach pads.

The Sotkamo multi-metal mine is a large and continuously developing site with a wide variety of ongoing projects. These complex and demanding assignments are well aligned with Tallqvist’s strengths. The company has extensive experience working in the mining and ore processing industry, and that expertise has grown over time.

“One of our clear advantages at the mine is that we have a broad and versatile fleet of our own equipment, as well as skilled personnel for different types of tasks,” Anttisaari notes. “Mining operations typically involve drilling, digging/loading, and transport – and the machinery is usually one size larger. We’ve been able to use our own equipment effectively in this environment.”
